The first question most merchants ask about weather holds is: 'What happens to the order after it's held?' It's a fair concern. A pile of held orders with no visibility into when they'll release is a customer service problem waiting to happen. WeatherFreight's nightly recheck is designed to solve exactly this.
How the Nightly Recheck Works
Every night at 1 AM Pacific, WeatherFreight runs a fresh weather check on every held order in your store. It pulls the current 14-day forecast for each order's route, evaluates it against your thresholds exactly as it did when the order was first placed, and makes a new hold or release decision.
- 'Conditions cleared' means the forecast at every waypoint is within safe range for the full remaining transit window
- The order note is updated with the new decision and the reason
- If cleared, the order is marked ready to fulfill — no manual intervention required
- If still unsafe, the order remains held with the current forecast data in the note
The Order Note Updates Automatically
Each recheck writes a fresh note to the order in Shopify. When conditions clear, the note reads the safe window and recommended ship dates. When conditions remain unsafe, the note is updated with current forecast data — so you always have the most recent picture, not a snapshot from when the order was first placed.
Holds are temporary by design. WeatherFreight doesn't hold orders indefinitely — it holds them until the forecast says it's safe, then releases them automatically.
What Merchants See in the Dashboard
The WeatherFreight dashboard shows every held order, its current status, and the reason it's being held. When an order moves from held to cleared overnight, it appears in your ready-to-fulfill queue the next morning. Weather that was a problem yesterday isn't your problem today — and you didn't have to do anything.
Nightly rechecks mean your held orders queue shrinks as conditions improve, without any manual monitoring. WeatherFreight watches the forecast so you don't have to.
